We understand the profound challenges that mental health issues can present, and we are passionate about making a difference in the lives of those who are affected.

My Story

With over two decades of service in the U.S. Army and multiple combat deployments, i’ve faced the harsh realities of the "Invisible Wounds" that many veterans and others endure. PTSD is a significant issue that can lead to devastating outcomes, including suicide. The statistics are alarming, with almost 1.5 million suicide attempts annually and about 55,000 resulting in death. These numbers underline the urgent need for awareness and intervention.

A Veteran's Impact

Chris was a remarkable individual, someone who had made an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. Our friendship flourished as we navigated the challenges and triumphs of Army life. We shared stories, dreams, and aspirations, maintaining frequent contact even as I neared my retirement. Chris seemed to be one of those people for whom the future held promise. However, beneath the surface, he carried the weight of his experiences, having endured multiple combat deployments that left him with both visible and invisible scars.

Despite the hardships, Chris was resilient and determined to carve out a new path for himself. He decided to pursue his passion for aviation and was on the brink of a new chapter in his life, poised to become a pilot. His journey brought him to the aviation school on September 19, 2018. That evening, he cherished time with his mother and brother, sharing a sense of hope and anticipation for what lay ahead. Tragically, Chris went to bed that night and never woke up, a sudden and heartbreaking end to a life filled with potential.

The loss of Chris was a profound blow to all who knew him. He left behind a grieving wife and five children, a family that now had to navigate their lives without his guiding presence. The memory of Chris serves as a poignant reminder of the unseen battles many veterans face and the importance of supporting those who carry such heavy burdens. His story underscores the need for vigilance, compassion, and understanding for those who have served, ensuring they receive the care and support they need to thrive.

Our Journey

My journey from retirement to becoming an advocate for mental health awareness is both inspiring and impactful. In September 2018, I transitioned from the Army to my career to private security, all while grappling with PTSD in silence due to the stigma associated with mental health issues. For nearly two years, I navigated this internal battle, secretly seeking treatment while hiding my struggles. Writing became my sanctuary, a way to cope with the intrusive thoughts and memories. I decided to start a blog, "Life with PTSD," to let others know they were not alone in their fight. The blog quickly became a beacon of hope, drawing friends and fellow Soldiers who sought comfort and understanding for their own wounds.

As the blog gained traction, it became evident that there was a significant need for supportive communities where discussions about mental health could take place openly. This realization led me, along with friends and family, to establish the non-profit organization Cars4Awareness. Leveraging my passion for cars, I created a unique platform where car enthusiasts could come together, share their stories, and access valuable resources. Through car-related events, I fostered a supportive environment that encouraged conversations about mental health, breaking down barriers and reducing the stigma associated with PTSD and other mental health issues.

Now, Old Sarge Life has taken on the challenge and continues to spread awareness and provide support to local organizations. The Teal & Purple Flag Projects symbolize our commitment to this cause. By representing PTSD with the color teal and suicide awareness with the colors purple and teal, these flags serve as a powerful reminder of the invisible wounds many people carry. By donating these flags, we offer hope, support, and a sense of belonging to those who struggle or have lost loved ones to these challenges. Our work exemplifies how collective efforts can dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health and ultimately reduce suicides, fostering a more understanding and compassionate community.
